The trouble is that nearly every page ranking for this search is a product listing. Each one tells you what it stocks. None tell you how to judge what is in the bottle, what a fair price looks like, or why the same oil smells different on your wrist in February.

The word itself covers a wide range. A bottle labelled attar can hold a distilled botanical oil, a blend of oils in a carrier, or a synthetic fragrance compound sitting in dipropylene glycol. All three are sold legitimately in Canada. The problem starts only when the label does not tell you which one you have.

Six checks that take about a minute each:

• Read the ingredient list. Cosmetics sold in Canada are required to carry one, so a bottle with no list at all is worth a question.

• Find the carrier. Dipropylene glycol, jojoba and fractionated coconut oil are common and perfectly normal. A carrier named plainly is a good sign.

• Weigh volume against price. A 12ml bottle priced like a 3ml bottle is telling you something about concentration.

• Ask what the oud is. Agarwood is costly and its pricing is contested across sources, so a cheap bottle promising pure oud deserves scrutiny.

• Smell it on skin, never on paper. An oil needs body heat to do anything. A blotter will always under-sell it.

• Wait twenty minutes. Oils have very little top-note lift, so your first impression is not the fragrance.

Listings usually name the notes, so read that note breakdown closely: the same three words can describe very different blends. What you give up is the chance to test. Winter transit matters too. An oil left in an unheated vestibule thickens, then recovers at room temperature.

Marketplaces and Resellers

Kijiji, third-party marketplace listings and general resellers carry attar at the lowest prices you will find. Some of it is genuine. The difficulty is provenance, since you often cannot see an ingredient list before paying, and returns on opened fragrance are rarely simple.
