Oud vs Attar: What Each Word Actually Means

Oud vs attar is the most common question we get, and it rests on a mistake. The two words do not name competing products. They answer different questions about the same bottle.

Most comparison pages line them up as rivals: oud in one column, attar in the other, each with an invented number of hours attached. That framing sends people to the wrong bottle, and those hour counts are not supported by anything.

Here is the accurate version. Oud is a material. Attar is a format. Once that clicks, the labels on an Arabian fragrance shelf stop being confusing and you can tell what you are actually buying.

What Oud Actually Is

Oud is agarwood: the dark, resinous heartwood that forms inside Aquilaria trees after they are infected by a mould. Healthy Aquilaria heartwood is pale and has almost no smell. The tree lays down resin as a defence, and that resin is the fragrant part. In natural forests only a small share of trees are ever infected, which is the whole reason the material is scarce.

That wood is then used in one of two ways. It can be burned in chips, or it can be distilled into oud oil, often called dehn al oud. Both are oud. Neither is a format of perfume on its own.

• It is a raw material. Oud names what is in the bottle, not how the bottle is worn.

• It comes from infected trees. Uninfected heartwood is pale and nearly odourless, so the mould is the point.

• It is genuinely scarce. Published estimates put the share of naturally infected wild trees in the single digits.

• It is protected. All Aquilaria species have been listed under CITES Appendix II since 2004, so legitimate supply is regulated.

• It is costly, and the figures are contested. Per kilogram prices quoted for top grade material vary enormously between sources, so treat any single number with caution.

• It is not one smell. Species, region and distillation move it from sharp and barnyard to sweet and balsamic.

Where Attar Fits, and the Words Around It

Attar Is a Format, Not an Ingredient

An attar is perfume carried in oil rather than alcohol, worn as a drop on skin. That definition says nothing about what is inside it. A rose attar and an oud attar are both attars. So What Is an Oud Attar?

An oud attar is exactly what the two words suggest: oud, in attar form. That combination is what most people are looking for when they search oud vs attar in the first place. It is also why the comparison fails as a versus. Asking whether to buy oud or attar is a bit like asking whether to buy leather or a jacket.

Dehn Al Oud, Mukhallat and Bakhoor

Dehn al oud means pure distilled oud oil with nothing blended into it. A mukhallat is a blend of several aromatic materials, which may or may not include oud. Bakhoor is scented wood chips meant to be burned rather than worn, and oud chips are the premium version of that. Four words, four different things. Most pages online use them loosely, and that is where the confusion starts.

Oud and Attar in Toronto and the GTA

Buying oud here raises a question the overseas guides never address: what is actually in the bottle. Agarwood is CITES listed and expensive, so a good deal of what sells as oud is a synthetic reconstruction or a heavily diluted blend.

Is oud an attar? Not on its own. Oud is the material. When oud oil is bottled to be worn on skin without alcohol, that bottle is an oud attar. The two words describe different layers of one product.

Which lasts longer, oud or attar? The question does not resolve, because an attar can be made of oud. Longevity depends on concentration and on your skin, not on which of the two words is printed on the label.

Is oud oil the same as agarwood? Agarwood is the resinous wood itself. Oud oil is what you get when that wood is distilled. In everyday use, oud is applied loosely to both.

Why is oud so expensive? Only a small share of wild Aquilaria trees ever form resin, every species is CITES protected, and distillation yields are low. Published per kilogram prices vary widely and should be read with care.

Is attar always alcohol free? Traditional attar contains no ethanol. Some modern bottles sold under the name do include a solvent, so it is worth reading the ingredients.

Can I burn an attar like bakhoor? No. Attar is an oil made for skin. Bakhoor is scented wood chips made to be burned on charcoal. Burning an attar wastes it and smells wrong.
