How long does attar last is the first thing most people ask before buying their first oil. The honest answer is a range, not a number. A well made attar usually holds six to twelve hours on skin, and far longer on fabric.

Most guides skip the range and give you one confident figure. That figure almost always comes from the brand selling the oil, tested on its own staff, in its own climate. Longevity is not a fixed property of a bottle. It is what happens when a particular oil meets your skin, your dose and the air around you.

How Long Does Attar Last on Skin and on Fabric

Attar is perfume oil with no alcohol and no water. Nothing flashes off in the first minute, so there is very little top note lift. The oil sits on the skin, warms, and releases slowly over hours. That slow release is the whole reason attar outlasts a spray.

Fabric behaves differently. Fibres hold oil without the heat and sweat that push it off skin, so scent on a scarf outlives scent on a wrist by days.

Rough bands to expect from an honestly made oil:

Light floral attars. Rose, jasmine and other flower led oils tend to run three to six hours before they sit close to the skin.
Sandalwood based blends. The classic carrier gives a steady six to ten hours, because sandalwood is itself a slow evaporating base.
Oud heavy mukhallats. Eight to twelve hours is normal, and some wearers report traces the next morning.
Amber and musk accords. These cling hardest of all, often sitting at skin level well past the twelve hour mark.
On cotton, wool or silk. Two to three days is common, and a wool coat can carry a scent longer than that.
In the bottle. Stored cool and dark, most attars keep for years, and some woody oils improve with age.

What Actually Changes Your Attar Longevity

Three variables explain most of the difference between two people wearing the same oil, and a fourth is your own nose, which stops registering the scent long before other people do.

Your Skin

Oily skin holds fragrance longest, because oil dissolves into oil. Dry skin lets an attar fade faster, sometimes by a third. Body heat matters too: a warmer wrist pushes the oil off quicker but projects more while it lasts. Moisturising with an unscented lotion first gives the oil something to grip, and is the cheapest longevity fix there is.

Dose and Placement

Attar is concentrated, so a dab does more work than people expect. Two or three touch points beat one heavy smear, because you are spreading the release rather than saturating one spot. The Oil Itself

Composition sets the ceiling. Heavy base materials such as oud, sandalwood, amber and musk evaporate slowly by nature, so blends built on them last longer. Thin or heavily diluted oils fade fast whatever you do. Price is a weak signal, since agarwood pricing is contested across sources and a high price does not guarantee a slow burn.
